40 years ago: Arrest made in death of 7-Eleven supervisor

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 12, 1974:

Terry Lee McClain, a former 7-Eleven employee, had been arrested the previous night in connection with the robbery and homicide of Gene Scott, area supervisor for the store chain. Officers arrested McClain, 24, 3056 W. Seventh, as he returned to Lawrence from a visit out of state. He was arraigned this morning on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery; bond was set at $100,000. In early July, Mr. Scott had been shot at least six time by a 9 mm weapon and his body left in a roadside ditch in Shawnee County. Authorities estimated he had been in possession of at least $5,000 in cash and checks, and robbery was believed to have been the motive. About a week before McClain’s arrest, a number of checks and other evidence, including three expended 9 mm cartridges, had been discovered on a farm south of Lawrence by two youngsters and had been taken to FBI labs in Washington, D.C., for analysis.
