Today in Lawrence: Hot, humid and peaceful

Learn how to use that hand-me-down sewing machine in Sewing Machine Basics at the Lawrence Public Library.

Hot, humid

Yesterday’s humidity comes to life today with a chance of isolated thunderstorms and a high of 93 degrees. The evening’s low is expected to be about 70, with more rain predicted. So pack an umbrella (and your lunch in case you want to stay in).

Demonstrating peace

Lawrencians take pride in peace with the annual protest of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945. Hosted by Lawrence Coalition for Peace & Justice, the Hiroshima Day demonstration will be at Ninth and Massachusetts streets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Sew and sew

Not sure where to start with that vintage Kenmore you inherited from your mom? Costumer, designer and milliner extraordinaire Valerie Ford will show you how to get the most out of your sewing machine at Sewing Machine Basics, 7-9 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library meeting room B. Space is limited, so please email Kristin Soper at ksoper@lawrencepubliclibrary.org if you are interested in attending.
