Today in Lawrence: ‘Transforming Oppression,’ Super Nerd Night

Late author Gabriel Garcia Marquez will be celebrated this afternoon at Kansas University.

More rain, then …

Another day, another thunderstorm. Mother Nature will keep it cool today with a high of 57, cloudy skies and showers possible throughout the day. Low of 40 tonight, then more of the same Thursday before a seven-day stretch of sunshine with highs near the 70s or above.

Love in the time of Gabriel

The phenomenal Colombian magical realist passed away April 17, but at 3:30 this afternoon you can help celebrate his legacy at the Hall Center for the Humanities, 900 Sunnyside Ave., when Kansas University hosts a remembrance for the great Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The public is invited to share readings or excerpts of their favorite pieces from the late author at this free event.

Mackey remembrance

Almost six years after the death of Jana Mackey, a former student and women’s rights activist, the KU community will join together once again for a lecture series dedicated in her honor at 7 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd. Urmi Basu, an advocate nationally recognized for her work on human trafficking and gender rights, will speak on “Transforming Oppression into Opportunity” at the sixth-annual Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series. Free to attend.
