Walkoff sinks KU softball

? Baylor’s Linsey Hays hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday to lift the Bears to a 2-1 softball victory over Kansas University.

Hays’ homer came against KU ace Kelsey Kessler, who had allowed just three hits until the one-out bomb to right center field. Kessler also struck out three and walked one, but fell to 17-11.

The Jayhawks (29-18 overall, 3-8 Big 12) had seven hits off the Bears (35-12, 8-4) but left 11 runners on base. Fresh off a Friday night victory against Kansas, Baylor pitcher Whitney Canion (21-9) picked up another win. Canion escaped bases-loaded jams twice — inheriting full bases with no outs in the fifth inning and later, in the seventh, allowing back-to-back walks followed by a fielding error. She held KU batters without a hit for the final three innings and struck out five.

Lily Behrmann (2-for-3) was the only Jayhawk with multiple hits. Chaley Brickey picked up KU’s only RBI by scoring Taylor McElhaney on a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning. Brickey also set a single-season school record for walks, adding two for 37 on the season, passing Tracy Bunge’s mark of 36 set in 1985.

The Jayhawks will look to avoid a series sweep at noon today.
