Volunteers needed to advocate for children in Douglas County

Douglas County CASA provides comprehensive advocacy for abused and neglected children in need of care and under the protection of the court system. Douglas County CASA is looking for volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASAs, for abused and neglected children. CASAs monitor the case, attend hearings and meetings, submit reports to the court, and advocate on behalf of the child. Volunteers must be 21 years old, submit an application, pass a background check and complete 30 hours of training. The next training session begins May 29. • The Social Service League promotes the social welfare of Douglas County by relieving the condition of needy individuals and families, so that they may sustain themselves. Volunteers with experience and knowledge of assembling tents are needed to assist with organizing donated tents to ensure all needed tent parts are included and usable. • Just Food serves as the Douglas County food bank for more than 30 partner agencies. Want to attend an exciting new event to Lawrence and volunteer for a great cause? Located in the Warehouse Arts District, the Kansas Food Truck Festival is a celebration of food, music, art and community. Volunteers are needed for this event on May 10, for a variety of tasks from setup, assisting with parking and traffic, ticket sales and activity helpers. • The Douglas County Dental Clinic is a nonprofit community dental clinic providing quality dental care to low-income and uninsured residents of Douglas County. The Dental Clinic is looking for volunteers to serve as sign language interpreters. Dental vocabulary is necessary and the schedule is on an as-needed basis. • The United Way of Douglas County is working to create long-term social change in Douglas County that ensures everyone can achieve their full potential through education, self-sufficiency and healthy lives. The United Way is looking for volunteers, ages 12-18, who are looking for a fun way to spend their summer. We have opportunities with a variety of local agencies available through our Summer of Service Program, running June 2 through July 31. • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. Are you looking to make a difference in the life of a young boy in our community? We currently have a 6-year-old boy on our waiting list who would enjoy being matched with a mentor. This active, friendly and talkative young boy likes to play outdoors, swim, play games and explore.
