25 years ago: Allen Press still fighting to use old church site for expansion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 21, 1989:

The owner of an old Lawrence church building filed papers this week with the appellate court to have a recent decision on the building declared unconstitutional. An attorney for Allen Realty Inc. filed the papers as part of an appeal of a decision by District Judge Michael Malone which had denied a demolition permit for the 118-year-old former Old English Lutheran Church at 1040 New Hampshire. Allen Realty Inc. was seeking to show that the district court had applied the wrong standard of review in their decision and also wanted to show that the state historic preservation act was unconstitutional. The company had applied for a permit to tear down the church and an adjacent house, saying the space was needed for a planned expansion of Allen Press, located just across the street from the unused building.
