25 years ago: Plants, animals represented at local parade

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 17, 1989:

About 20 people representing many varieties of animals and plants participated in an All Species Parade across the Kansas River bridge on a recent weekend. The Kansas Area Watershed Council had sponsored the parade to raise awareness and appreciation of animals and plants, according to Sandy Strand, a member of the council who dressed as a bald eagle. “The idea of the parade is a celebration of the species of our region,” she said. “It’s for the whole family to have a good time and just honor these critters.” Several eagles were represented in the event, as well as a rabbit, a cat, an otter, and different varieties of prairie grass and flowers.
