25 years ago: Cyclists oppose possible changes for rural riding

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 12, 1989:

About 25 members of the Lawrence Bike Club met this week to talk about changes discussed at a Douglas County Commission hearing. Commissioner Louie McElhaney, who had called the hearing, said several area farmers and motorists had complained to him about traffic safety problems caused by bicycle riders on County Roads 458 and 1055. Saying that the flat, smooth roads were two of the most popular for cyclists, club members at their meeting agreed to oppose any attempts to restrict bike traffic. McElhaney had made no proposal but had said he wanted to discuss finding alternate routes or closing the roads to cyclists during peak motor traffic hours.
