Shot put returns to downtown

The downtown shot put, a popular event the past three springs, will be back for a fourth with another field loaded with Olympians, the Lawrence Sports Corporation announced Thursday.

The event, held in conjunction with the 87th Kansas Relays, is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday, April 18, on Eighth Street between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the site of the first two competitions. Last year, an ominous weather forecast triggered a move to the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Reese Hoffa, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, and Christian Cantwell, 2008 Olympic silver medalist, highlight the tentative field announced Thursday.

At the urging of the competitors, a 6,700-pound concrete circle will replace the plywood circle used in past years.

The Lawrence Sports Commission partners with Kansas Athletics and the City of Lawrence in putting on the event. The Kansas Relays are scheduled for April 16-19 at under-construction Rock Chalk Park.
