Douglas County commissioners have agreed to delay for two weeks a decision about a proposed pumpkin patch business in a rural southeast county neighborhood. Commissioners have rescheduled the discussion for Oct. 9.

Commissioners were scheduled to vote on a proposed permit for the business at 6:35 p.m. today, but county administrator Craig Weinaug said the matter was deferred at the request of the attorney for the applicants.

Kirk and Julie Berggren of Overland Park had applied for an agritourism permit to operate a commercial pumpkin patch at a 40-acre site on Kansas Highway 33, about five miles east of Baldwin City. But many nearby property owners objected, arguing the proposed business was too intensive for the quiet rural area.

The county’s planning and zoning staff had drafted a list of conditions for the permit that were intended to address the neighbors’ concerns.

Weinaug, however, indicated the Berggrens attorney wanted more time to negotiate the conditions with the county’s legal staff.

Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. to consider other matters that are not expected to generate public comment.
