From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 25, 1988:

Volunteers worked Saturday to carve out details on a stone buffalo sculpture that had recently been placed in a patch of prairie grass northwest of the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Clinton Parkway. As creator Jim Patti attached the buffalo’s tail, a group consisting of other professional sculptors as well as amateurs surrounded him, chiseling away at the upper body and legs to create the look of hair. Four-year-old Katie Toplikar, the youngest volunteer on the crew, was using a hand file to smooth down one of the creature’s legs. “You can see she’s not doing any damage,” said Patti, “and I’m just so happy to have young people show an interest in it.” The 3.5-ton limestone animal was likely to need another Saturday of work before it was completed, Patti said. “We’ve still got the eyes to do, and texture the whole front.” Passersby were already taking notice of the new addition to the neighborhood. “It really adds something to Clinton Parkway,” said Dianne Hildibrand, who had stopped by with her family. “It’s prairie grass, and it belongs here.”
