From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 17, 1988:

• Local cookbook authors Frank Carey and Jayni Naas were working on a new book and were seeking help in gathering examples of the best of Kansas cooking. The pair had visited fairs and festivals across the state and had talked with numerous cooks to find recipes and stories for the “Kansas Cookbook,” to be published by the University Press of Kansas. “Your German grandmother’s recipe for Linzertorte or your brother-in-law’s barbecued beef are exactly what we’re looking for — old family recipes as well as contemporary ones,” Naas said. The authors had already collected recipes for such delicacies as Mennonite sausages, barbecued spare ribs, Jonathan apple crumb pie, and buffalo stew.
• Movies showing in Lawrence theaters this week included “Cocktail” at the Granada, “Young Guns” at the Varsity, and “A Fish Called Wanda,” the fourth “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Betrayed,” “Stealing Home,” and “Moon Over Parador” at the Hillcrest. The Dickinson theaters at 23rd and Iowa were showing “Midnight Run,” “Die Hard,” “Bull Durham,” “License to Drive,” “Married to the Mob,” and “Big.”
