Monarch Watch is hosting its fall open house on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Foley Hall on Kansas University’s west campus. The education outreach program is dedicated to restoring the declining monarch butterfly population in America.

Attendees can learn about creating monarch waystations and check out the program’s butterfly and pollinator garden, which is maintained by the Douglas County Master Gardeners, and the nearby biohouse, which contains monarchs, other butterflies and butterfly flowers.

The event is free and is designed for adults and children alike, and refreshments will be provided. There will also be a honeybee observation hive, unusual insects, tours of the garden and lab space, hands-on activities, games and videos.

A limited number of monarch caterpillars and milkweed plants will be available for people who want to watch the monarch’s developmental process at home. Attendees will also have the opportunity to tag and release monarchs.
