Lawrence man arrested on suspicion of sex crime involving child, 9

A 63-year-old Lawrence man was charged today with a sex crime involving a nine-year-old child.

Douglas County prosecutors have accused the man of attempting to persuade the child into performing an illegal sex act on June 1. He was arrested by officers of the Lawrence Police Department about noon Thursday in the 2800 block of Lakeview Road, in northern Lawrence, according to jail records.

The man appeared in Douglas County District Court via video from Douglas County Jail, where he remained today with bond set at $5,000. He has been charged with one count of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child.

Pro Tem Judge James George added to the bond requirements a condition that the man have no contact with children while the charge is pending against him. Prosecutors had asked for that condition because, they said, the man had admitted to police that he had child pornography on his computer.

If convicted, the man could face up to 136 months in prison, depending on his criminal history, according to Kansas state sentencing guidelines. He is scheduled to appear in court again Tuesday.

The Journal-World generally does not name sex-crime suspects unless they are convicted.
