Attorney General Schmidt sets up website to warn Kansans of scams

? Attorney General Derek Schmidt today launched a website designed to help Kansans avoid scams.

“Scams and rip offs can leave people feeling frustrated and alone not knowing where to turn for help,” Schmidt said.

The website is www.InYourCornerKansas.org. The attorney general’s office also has a consumer protection hotline at 1-800-432-2310.

The website includes information on the latest scams in Kanas and consumer protection tips. The website allows people to file a complaint to request investigations by the attorney general’s office.

The website lists the 5 top scams. Those include callers requesting personal information to offer lower credit card interest rates; calls or emails asking for taxes or a delivery fee for an awarded prize; calls saying a free medical device has been paid for in exchange for personal information; computer pop ups requesting payments or an illegal act will be turned over to the FBI; and emails from unknown senders that ask a person to follow a link or open an attachment to verify personal information.

Schmidt said he is making consumer protection a priority and last year his office handled more than 4,000 complaints and recovered a record $49 million.
