SM South edges LHS soccer, 2-1

? Narito Mendez’s first-half goal gave Lawrence High an early lead, but the Lions fell to Shawnee Mission South, 2-1, on Thursday night in high school boys soccer.

Lawrence led 1-0 at halftime, but South tied the score five minutes into the second half and took the lead 15 minutes into the half.

Mendez’s goal came on a second effort after his initial shot deflected off the SM South goalkeeper.

“Narito stayed with it,” LHS coach Mike Murphy said.

Murphy cited the play of Connor Henrichs, Parker Davies and Piper Hubble.

“We were a little inconsistent,” Murphy said. “When we were pressuring the ball and playing aggressively, we made quite a few nice opportunities for ourselves. We played hard enough to win.”

The Lions (5-8-1) will play Tuesday at Olathe North.
