Blood drive in honor of 5-year-old to be held Thursday

The Community Blood Center and Lawrence Hearing Aid Center will team up Thursday morning for a blood drive to honor a 5-year-old grandson of one of the hearing aid center’s employees.

The Aiden Burkhart Honorary Blood Drive will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday on a donor bus outside the center at 4106 West 6th St.

The drive is named for a 5-year-old Topeka boy diagnosed in February with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare, non-genetic cancer. Bernadette Burkhart, a Lawrence Hearing Aid Center employee and Aiden’s grandmother, said Aiden had to be sent home from treatments in a Kansas City, Kan., hospital after the hospital ran out of blood platelets for him.

Appointments for Thursday can be booked online at savealifenow.org by entering the sponsor code “ABurkhart.” For additional information, contact the center’s owner Kimberly Henderson at 785-749-1885. For questions about medical eligibility call 800-245-7035.
