25 years ago: New suits for Jayhawk mascots unveiled at Allen Fieldhouse

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 15, 1988:

It had taken about eight months and $2,400 worth of donations, but Kansas University basketball fans had gotten their first glimpse of the new suits for Big Jay and Baby Jay overnight during the “Later with Roy Williams” basketball opener at Allen Fieldhouse, where KU’s new men’s basketball coach had been joined by an estimated crowd of 10,000 fans for the official opening of practice. The birds in their new outfits were to join a whole flock of first- and second-generation Jayhawk mascots at this morning’s downtown parade in celebration of homecoming weekend. According to an article today, “Even Baby Doc, the mascot from the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. was to join his ‘Hawk cousins for the festivities.” One major change was for Baby Jay, who in his most recent incarnation was to sport webbed feet.
