A cycling event and the Mother Earth News Fair will fill downtown with visitors this weekend and temporarily close some streets to regular traffic.

The Mother Earth Fair is expected to draw 10,000 people to Watson Park today and Sunday. The part of Seventh Street that runs through the park will be closed both days to accommodate the fair and the 600 block of Tennessee Street will be closed from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday to accommodate the event.

Massachusetts Street from 11th Street to 13th Street will be closed from 7 to 9 a.m. Sunday to accommodate the Lawrence Bicycle Club’s Octoginta ride. The Octoginta, now in its 44th year, will bring bicyclists to town Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, according to the club’s Web site, many cyclists will gather at Broken Arrow Park near 31st and Louisiana to depart on a 30-mile ride throughout the county. On Sunday, riders will gather at South Park on Sunday morning for an 80-mile ride throughout northeast Kansas.

In addition, the portion of New Hampshire Street just south of Ninth Street will be open only to southbound traffic during the weekend as construction on the adjacent hotel site has temporarily extended into the street.
