From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 8, 1913:

• “Armed with a piece of gas pipe, Richard Nightingale is said to have attacked A. R. Lutz, an employee of the Price Mercantile Company, this morning at 11 o’clock, when the latter came to his house, 913 New York street. Lutz says he was on his weekly rounds collecting for the Price store and had stopped to collect a weekly payment on a rug which the Nightingales had purchased on a weekly payment plan. Nightingale is being held prior to arraignment on a warrant charging him with assault with intent to kill…. The weekly visits of Lutz to the Nightingale house seem to have caused comment among neighbors and Nightingale claims to have received anonymous letters charging Lutz with intimacy with his wife while he was at work…. Mrs. Lutz says she did not know her husband was in the house when Lutz called until he sprang past her with a piece of pipe in his hand. She says she told Lutz that her husband was suspicious and that he had better not call any more to collect unless he were there.”
• “The city ordinance forbidding expectorating on the sidewalk or in public buildings of the city is to be rigidly enforced in the future. Mayor E. U. Bond has requested the police department to see that violators of this law are brought to justice. Much complaint of this nuisance has been heard recently and the Mayor means that it must be stopped. The city ordinance makes it a misdemeanor punished by a fine of from one to ten dollars.”
• “The improvements on the New York school building are nearly done. The building has been overhauled and is now one of the handsomest in the city. It used to be an ugly building and is now pretty as well as convenient. The people in that part of town ought to feel mighty grateful to have the building made so complete and modern.”
• “The man of mystery who has been bothering residents of the south end for some time was out again last night. A dog discovered him on the back porch at the home of Prof. Schwegler, 1601 Rhode Island street and gave fight. The man made his get-away again.”
