100 years ago: KU sociology department conducts thorough study on ‘fraternity situation’

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 23, 1913:

  • “A thorough study of the fraternity situation at the University of Kansas, which has received more or less criticism, with a view of getting the exact status of the condition is being made by Professor V. F. Helleberg, head of the department of sociology. Letters are being sent to each of the 5,000 graduates of the school and also the undergraduates asking for their personal experiences with fraternities and sororities. In this way the department expects to get the view from both Greeks and non-Greeks. It is expected that in this way a true representation of the good and evil of fraternal societies will be given…. At present a graduate student in the department is studying the social psychology of the situation and his report will be used as a working hypothesis for the questionnaire which will be conducted. It will take some time for the answers to the letters to be sent in to Professor Helleberg, so the final report probably will not be ready before next year. After all the answers come in the data will be tabulated and worked up into an exhaustive report dealing with the situation from every angle.”
  • “An appropriation to aid in the Grasshopper War in Kansas was made yesterday by the State Board of Administration which held a short session at the University. The contribution to the grasshopper extermination cause is for $1,500 for a period of two years, the money to be used by the state entomological commission. Recently Governor Hodges issued a proclamation naming a Grasshopper Killing Day. Last summer Prof. S. J. Hunter aided in the fight on the pests in western Kansas, and now the treasury of the University is to be drawn upon to aid in the finishing of the campaign. Just how this money will be used has not yet been decided.”
  • “Two railroad wrecks and a hard game against the Texas Aggies were sufficient to put the Haskell Indians in bad shape for their big game with Warrensburg…. ‘The first wreck we were in occurred at Parker, Missouri, yesterday,’ said Coach ‘Doc’ Kennedy this afternoon. ‘None of our bunch was shaken up very much but we were delayed a good while. This morning while we were coming into the yards in Kansas City our engine hit a switch engine and the boys, who were leaning over packing their suitcases, were thrown against the seats. Charlie Williams was hurt in the shakeup. His leg had been injured in the game and was sprained over when the shock came.'”
