Lawrence native Brady Tanner won a handful of awards last week at the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL) world championships in Reno, Nev.

Tanner, competing in the 259-pound weight class, won a Special Olympics world championship Wednesday with a bench press of 440 pounds. He also won the “Outstanding Bench Presser” award, an honor bestowed upon only one lifter in all age groups and categories.

The 2001 Lawrence High graduate was just as successful in the deadlift competition, winning a second world championship in his division with a lift of 540 pounds. He also earned the “Outstanding Lifter” award presented to only one weight-lifter in all age groups and categories.

Tanner, who has Rubenstein-Taybi syndrome, which affects motor skills and his ability to speak and learn, was inducted into the LHS Alumni Association’s Hall of Honor in September.
