25 years ago: Special Olympians coming to Lawrence for indoor sports competition

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 10, 1988:

  • About 160 Lawrence and Douglas County Special Olympians were slated to compete in Lawrence this month in the Kansas Special Olympics Indoor Sports Tournament East. About 1,000 athletes were arriving for the tournament, which included athletes from the eastern half of the state. Competitions were to get under way at Kansas University’s Robinson Center and at Royal Crest Lanes.
  • In Topeka, three key lawmakers today unveiled a nearly $2.1 billion highway improvement plan which was to provide revenues for improved maintenance of highways, major road and bridge improvements, and increased aid to city and county governments through the year 2000. The funds for the program were to come from increases in vehicle registration fees, sales tax, and the gasoline tax.
