From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 8, 1988:

A full slate of candidates greeted Lawrence voters today as the 1988 election got under way at 7 a.m. Sunny weather, a tight presidential race, and some interesting local races had brought more than 25 percent of the city’s registered voters to their polling places as of noon today. Douglas County Clerk Petty Jaimes said that her office was unusually busy today, even for an election day: “The phones are ringing off the desks…. They’re wanting to know where to vote. It would appear it is very heavy.” The noontime check of the city’s 33 polling places showed several with lines of up to a dozen people. In addition to the national ticket of George Bush and Dan Quayle vs. Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen, the 2nd Congressional District race offered local voters the choice of Jim Slattery or Phil Meinhardt. Other contests on the local ballot included three sets of candidates vying for seats in the Kansas Legislature. The only county-wide race was for sheriff, with Democrat Gale Pinegar facing off against Republican Loren Anderson.
