From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 1, 1988:

• An apparent Halloween prank had resulted in a big mess for a downtown business today. Lawrence police reported that someone had turned off power to the Superlative Ice Cream and Deli Shop, 1000 Massachusetts, causing freezers to shut down. The store’s manager said that 48 canisters of ice cream had melted and several cases of pies, baked goods, and meat were ruined. Damage was estimated at $2,400. “I can’t imagine what kids do or why they’re that way,” said the manager, who said she suspected a group of youths who habitually gathered in that area on a nightly basis. “Just a few more (incidents) like this and I’ll have to hang this business up.”
• Kansas University Athletic Director Bob Frederick this morning announced NCAA sanctions against the 1988 champion KU men’s basketball team that included a prohibition on participation in the 1989 NCAA tournament. KU had been sanctioned for violations occurring between June 1986 and April 1987 during Larry Brown’s tenure as head coach. The NCAA Committee on Infractions had also informed KU that it could not pay for campus visits by prospective athletes from Jan. 1, 1989, to Dec. 31, 1989; it must reduce by one the total number of scholarships in effect for the 1989-90 year; and it must show cause why it should not be penalized further if it failed to dissociate three representatives of KU’s athletic interests from the athletic program. Frederick today declined to name the three representatives mentioned in the latter order.
