One man has been arrested in connection with a vehicle chase Wednesday morning near Tonganoxie, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The man was arrested while hiding in a barn in the 20500 block of 235th Street, or County Road 30, about two miles northwest of Tonganoxie, about two hours after fleeing a traffic stop a few miles to the west on Kansas Highway 16, said highway patrol trooper Ian Ingram.

Earlier reports from law enforcement said two people were arrested, but the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office has said only one man is in custody in connection with this incident.

The incident began shortly before 9 a.m., when a trooper tried to stop a Ford Explorer for a traffic violation on K-16, just north of Tonganoxie. The driver of the Explorer refused to pull over and led the trooper on a pursuit, eventually driving onto a residential property on County Road 30.

The driver pulled the Explorer into a field on the property and turned it around to face the trooper, who arrived and stepped out of his vehicle to order the driver, at gunpoint, to exit his vehicle. The Explorer accelerated toward the trooper, who fired at the Explorer and punctured one of its tires. No one was injured in the shooting.

The Explorer drove around the trooper and fled again, temporarily escaping. Troopers and deputies of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office used a helicopter to search for the suspect. They located the vehicle later, abandoned on Mitchell Road, also just north of Tonganoxie.

Ingram said the suspect apparently fled on foot from the vehicle and made his way back to the rural property where the trooper had shot out the tire of the Explorer.

“He must have been from the area, because he ran straight from that area back to the barn,” Ingram said.

Troopers and deputies found the man hiding in the barn and arrested him about 11 a.m. Ingram said the man was booked into Leavenworth County Jail on suspicion of fleeing and eluding law enforcement. The arrested man’s name was not immediately available Wednesday.
