From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 11, 1913:

• “Evidently some person has a particular grudge against the University Y.M.C.A. and takes his spite out in the form of stealing the Association’s money. For the third time within a year the offices of the University Y.M.C.A. in Myers Hall have been robbed. Last summer the thief secured a small sum of money and during the Christmas holidays he took a brand new Remington typewriter. On Thursday evening the third burglary took place and the strong box in the Secretary’s desk with some $43.70 in currency and checks was removed.”
• “‘A Scrap of Paper,’ the Lawrence High School Senior play, put on by the boys and girls not much more than half way through their ‘teens, was given last night at the Bowersock and won applause from a large audience. It was undoubtedly one of the best amateur performances of the year, being ranked by many above some of the plays given by the university students.”
• “The children of Quincy school are having great success selling tickets for the Patee Nickel for next Thursday. The net proceeds on that day are given to the playgrounds work in the city. Quincy was the first school to have a playground and it has been such a pronounced success that the children are wild over it.”
• “The 1913 Douglas County Fair will be held from September 22 to 27. This week was selected at a meeting of the directors of the Fair Association held yesterday afternoon…. Much enthusiasm over the fair this fall was displayed and the chairmen of the various committees all reported that they were planning to make their departments much better this year than they had ever been before, and thus the entire fair promises to be a record breaker. With the prospects bright for good crops there is every indication that there will be a big fair here next fall.”
• “The library board held a social meeting last night to consider the question of binding the library books. After carefully examining the samples submitted the board by a unanimous vote awarded the contract to the Journal-World.”
• “A class in physiology under Dr. Ida Hyde of the University visited the Bowersock Flour Mills this morning and saw how flour is made. The students were escorted through the buildings and the various processes explained to them by obliging millers.”
