Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Jayhawk Tennis Center: The Jayhawk Tennis Center is taking enrollment (ages 4-10) in Quick Start Tennis classes and Juniors (ages 10-18) in the Jayhawk Tennis Academy. Adult Cardio and Instructional Drill classes meet Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. In-house and USTA leagues for adults of all skill levels are open for Spring/Summer registration. Salvation Army hoops: The Salvation Army basketball program will conduct summer 3-on-3 half-court leagues for grades pre-K-to-fifth. Games will be May 28-June 27 at the East Lawrence Rec Center. Audio-Reader golf: Former Kansas University and professional football standout John Hadl will show his support for Audio-Reader by chairing the fourth annual Audio-Reader Golf Classic for the second year in a row. Middle school summer basketball league: Games will be played Thursday evenings May 30-June 27. Teams will play two games per night. Lawrence/Free State youth football camp: The Lawrence/Free State youth football camp will run June 24-26. Session for students entering third/fourth grades will run 8:30-10:30 a.m.; fifth-eighth graders will go 8:30 a.m.-noon. All city schools have camp fliers. Archery club: The Junior Olympic Archery Development Club meets at 9 a.m. every Saturday at 9:00 in the indoor target range at Overton’s Archery Center, 1025 N. Third Street, Suite 119. Golf Classic: The Kansas Athletics Golf Classic supporting Douglas County Special Olympics will be held June 24 at Alvamar Private. Registration starts at noon, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Range balls, golf, dinner, on-course contests, goodie bags and a silent auction are included in the $125.00/person entry fee. Long Drive: The Time Warner Cable Long Drive Championship will be held at 9 a.m. on May 11 at Eagle Bend driving range. It’s $300 to enter and the field is full at 24 players. After the event there will be a local competition from 1 to 4 p.m. Cost is $40 per entry. No need to pre-register, just show up. A Long Drive Pro-Am will be held at 4:30 p.m. May 10 at Eagle Bend. Entry includes: nine holes with cart, a long-drive T-shirt, hit on Flightscope ball launch monitor, long drive/closest to the hole contests. Unique format: 4 Man Scramble. Cost is $50 per person/$200 per group.

LHS tennis camps: Lawrence High tennis camps will be open to all LHS tennis players attending LHS for the 2013-14 school year. The camps will be 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 4-July 18. There also will be a future LHS tennis camp for boys and girls in grades 6-8. The future camp will meet from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on the same dates. Players will work on tennis skills, strategies and group play. Cost for the 13 sessions is $65, or $5 a day. Golf tournament: The Dave “Doc” Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament will be June 1 at Alvamar. It is a four-person scramble. Sign-in starts at 7 a.m. and a shotgun start is at 8. Coast is $300 per team. Family Promise 5K: The 5K Home Run Memorial Day to benefit Family Promise of Lawrence and the Lawrence Community Shelter will be at 8 a.m. May 27. Prizes for all age groups. Register at

Jayhawk Model Masters: The Jayhawk Model Masters will host an “All Electric Fly-In” Saturday at the Model Airplane Field below Clinton Dam. The event is free to the public from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Concessions and facilities on site.

LHS wrestling camp: Lawrence High’s wrestling camp will run June 3-5 at LHS. All ages and schools welcome. Sessions run 9-11 a.m. (grades 1-5; fee is $50) and 12:30-2 p.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. (grades 6-12; $100). Family discounts available. For information, visit

Puma FC camp and tryouts: Puma Futbol Club — a nonprofit affiliated with the Sporting Club Network of the Kansas City soccer club Sporting KC — will hold a pre-tryout camp June 3-5 at the Youth Sports Inc. field No. 14. Sessions are: 4:30-5:30 p.m. (U8-U10); 5:30-6:30 p.m. (U11-U12); and 6:30-7:30 p.m. (U13+). Cost is $55. Tryouts are slated for the same times on June 8-9 at the same field. For information, visit
