From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 20, 1988:

• After several years of planning, the Lawrence Public Schools Endowment Association was finally ready to launch into action, with an official kickoff dinner set for April 8 at Alvamar Country Club. Because the school district was so dependent on state aid, an endowment would be helpful in providing for “extras” that went above and beyond the basic needs of the schools, according to Maggie Carttar, school board member and president of the endowment’s board of trustees.
• The field of candidates for the two Douglas County Commission seats up for election this year had dropped from six to five, with Warren “Bud” Best announcing that he intended to withdraw from the race for personal reasons. Best, a retired employee of Western Electric, said that he would put his support behind fellow Republican Louie McElhaney.
• Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis had won the Kansas Democratic caucuses on the previous day, with Jesse Jackson coming in second. With 115 caucuses reporting, Dukakis had collected 278 local delegates for 35 percent, Jackson 235 for 31 percent, and Missouri Rep. Richard Gephardt, who had chosen not to campaign in Kansas, 12 delegates. Illinois Sen. Paul Simon had not picked up a single Kansas delegate. The local race had been a good one for Jackson, who had won two-thirds of the delegates at stake in the Douglas County caucus.
