Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Trail Hawks race: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the third-annual “Pi Day” half-marathon and 5K at 8 a.m., March 10, on the Kansas River trail system. The Pi-Day River Rotation Half Marathon Trail Race begins and ends by the Kansas River Trails trailhead, just off Eight and Oak streets in North Lawrence. The race course is a winding, twisting, mostly smooth trail with a few roots and inclines sprinkled in. The half-marathon is a three-loop course, alternating between two approximately counter-clockwise loops and one clockwise. The 5K runners will race one 3.1-mile loop. Girls fast pitch: The registration deadline for Lawrence 8U machine pitch, 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U girls fast pitch is April 1. Cost for 8U machine pitch is $65 per child; equipment will be provided. A coaches meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., April 18 at Holcom Park Rec Center. Scholarships are available at the Community Building 115 W. 11th Street by March 25. Cost for the other divisions is $900 per team, with a maximum of eight teams per league. There is a nonrefundable deposit of $100 to secure a spot in the league, with the remainder due at the coaches meeting at 6:30 p.m., April 16 at Holcom Park Rec center. Girls volleyball clinic: Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is enrolling for its spring girls volleyball clinic. The clinic is open to girls in fourth through eighth grades and will cover the fundamentals, skills and rules needed to better prepare them for school team competition. The clinic will run 9-10:45 a.m. for fourth through sixth grades and 11 a.m-1 p.m. for sixth through eighth grades. The clinic will be held three consecutive Saturdays, April 20 through May 4 at East Lawrence Recreation Center (1245 E. 15th St.). Cost is $50 per participant, which includes a clinic T-shirt. Trinity fitness walks: A noncompetitive fitness walk will be held March 23. No times will be kept and there is no registration fee for the 2K and 5K walks, but participants are encouraged to bring a can of food, which will be donated to the Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry. Walkers should meet in the Trinity Lutheran Church fellowship hall at 13th and New Hampshire streets at 10 a.m. to fill out an entry form and sign a waiver. Junior golf: Lawrence Country Club participates in the Junior Team Golf Association (JTGA), a summer team junior golf tour with Kansas City area country clubs. If you are interested in learning more, please attend the organizational meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in the lower lounge. JTGA consists of approximately 12 nine-hole tournaments during June and July, with a qualifier and championship at the end of July. Competing teams are from Kansas City area country clubs. Tournaments are on weekdays with 8 a.m. shot-gun starts. Each team has four junior golfers, and the top three scores are combined as the team score for each tournament.
