25 years ago: Four new babies to celebrate unusual birthday

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 1, 1988:

  • The year 1988 was a Leap Year, and four babies had made their debut at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Feb. 29. The little ones, two boys and two girls, would join the select group of people who got to celebrate their “official” birthday only once every four years. One of the mothers, who had deliberately chosen the date for her daughter’s delivery, said that the child would have a “special celebration” in the coming years no matter what day she chose for her off-year birthdays.
  • Top officials at Kansas University and the University of Costa Rica reaffirmed their commitment to an exchange program between the two schools. KU Chancellor Gene Budig and UCR Rector Fernando Duran re-signed the exchange agreement in a ceremony at the university in San Jose, Costa Rica.
  • The Kansas Lottery announced that it would start its third “instant-win” game this week. The “Kansas Cash” game was to kick off with promotional events in 44 cities co-sponsored by the Kansas Oil Marketers Association.
