40 years ago: Lost parrot, mysterious monkey reported in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 26, 1973:

  • Lawrence was compared to a zoo one day this week when it was reported that Zulu, a female African Gray parrot, was missing from the family home and that in another neighborhood a monkey had been sighted swinging through the trees. Mrs. James Cox of 723 Lawrence Ave. said that Zulu had “just spooked and flew out the front door when other people came in.” The family was offering a reward for the bird’s return. Meanwhile, neighbors in the vicinity of Hillview Road had called in reports to the newspaper at about noon of a monkey “Tarzaning” in the trees. The police department said that they had no information on the incident.
  • Movie fans in Lawrence this week could visit the Granada to see Clint Eastwood in “High Plains Drifter” or the Varsity to see Ryan O’Neal and his daughter Tatum in “Paper Moon.” The Hillcrest theaters were featuring “Billy the Kid,” “Last Summer,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Trick Baby.”
