Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Family Promise golf: Former Kansas University basketball player Wayne Simien, KU coach Bill Self and his wife, Cindy, again will co-chair the Family Promise Golf Tournament and auction party. The auction party — to benefit homeless children and their families in Lawrence — will be Sept. 15 at Maceli’s. On Sept. 16, four-person teams will compete in two flights of the golf tournament at Alvamar Country Club. Registration fees include lunch, golf and cart, dinner and beverages both on and off the course, plus two admissions to the auction party. Chalmers appearance: Former Kansas University basketball player and current Miami Heat Mario Chalmers will sign autographs from noon-2 p.m., July 27 at Crown Toyota/Scion/Volkswagon in Lawrence as a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The event is to raise awareness for potential bone-marrow donors.

Phenix tryouts: Lawrence Phenix fastpitch will hold tryouts July 27-28 at Holcom Park. Times: 8-9:15 a.m. both days for 8U; 9:30-11 a.m. both days for 12U; 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. both days for 14U; and 1:30-3 p.m. on July 27, and also at 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 28 at YSC Fields 5 and 6. Diamondbacks tryouts: The 10U Lawrence Diamondbacks will hold a tryout for 5-6 spots on its fall baseball team and potential spots on our team for next spring. Fall baseball will consist of weekly practices and 4-5 competitive tournaments. The tryout will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m., July 27 at YSC Field No. 3. Walters ace: Nick Walters had a hole-in-one using an 8-iron on the 115-yard No. 18 hole at Oak Country Golf Course in De Soto. Witness was Dagan Walters, Paul Jones and Brian Brost.

Jura hole-in-one: Graham Jura used a pitching wedge to fire a hole-in-one at the 150-yard No. 5 hole at Eagle Bend.

Volleyball camp: The Last Chance Volleyball Camp will be held July 29-Aug. 2. Softball school: The Five Tool Softball School will have tryouts for 18-, 16-, 14-, and 12-year-old girls fastpitch teams for this fall/summer of 2014. There are spots available on all five current 5-tool teams. Depending on intrest, additional teams will be formed if needed. Tryouts will be held at the Free State softball field beginning at 2 p.m. (registration starting at 1:30 p.m.) on Aug. 3 and 4.
