From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 20, 1988:

• City commissioners this week unanimously denied a demolition permit to Allen Realty Inc. and in so doing saved a 117-year-old Lawrence church from its demise. The vote had come after about two hours of comments from the public and from Todd Thompson, attorney for Allen Realty. The church, at 1040 New Hampshire, and a neighboring house to the south would have been demolished in the planned expansion of Allen Press.
• In the opening event of the Kansas Open, more than 50 contributors to the professional-amateur golf tournament had teamed with Cottonwood consumers in a miniature golf tournament at the Putt-Putt Golf Course in Lawrence. The Putt-Putt Open was the first event leading up to the July 28-30 pro-am tournament to benefit Cottonwood.
• A public dance was scheduled to follow grand-opening ceremonies for the city’s new Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th Street. The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and the Holcom Recreation Center Foundation were hosting the event, and the 20-piece Jazzhaus Swing Band was to provide music.
• Downtown stores were rumored to be opening at 7 or even 6 a.m. this Thursday as the sun rose on the annual Sidewalk Sale. The Downtown Lawrence Association had ordered 1,000 pounds of ice to chill the 1,000 pounds of watermelon to be given away by the slice during the sale.
