From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 19, 1988:

• Three candidates for Douglas County Sheriff had taken part in a locally televised debate this week. Republican Loren Anderson, current undersheriff, Republican Dallas Murphy, jail administrator, and Democrat Dale Pinegar, a local private investigator, had taken the stage as well as candidates for the county commission and for the 2nd Congressional District seats. The two-hour forum had been sponsored by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs Committee. Among other topics, participants had discussed the role of a county administrator, the best ways to fight crime in the county, and whether length of residency should be considered in a congressional race.
• It was too soon to tell if there was a genuine baby boom afoot in Lawrence, but there had been 545 babies delivered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital from January through June — a number which represented 18 more than those born in the first six months of the previous year. Judith Hefley, LMH director of communications, said that it was still too early to predict a final total for 1988 but that births seemed to be slowing down a bit in July.
