From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 6, 1973:

A suit seeking to recover cash found Oct. 5 on a farm south of Lawrence was filed this week in Douglas County District Court by two persons who stated that they were tenants on the farm. The replevin suit was filed against the State of Kansas, the Douglas County Attorney, and the Douglas County State Bank. Bradford D. Charles and Susie Payton had claimed the money while the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was holding it, according to a KBI spokesman. The petition read that the sum of cash, identified as between $10,000 and $25,000, was not taken in execution or in order of judgment, or as a tax lien. The suit also asked $2,000 damages, interest on the money while it was being held by another party. Back on Oct. 5, a man who had purchased some machinery from the farm was moving it from its location there when he discovered the cash nearby. The exact amount of cash had not been released by Sheriff Rex Johnson or by the KBI, which had received the money from the finder and had later transferred it to the sheriff’s department, but unofficial reports placed the amount in excess of $18,000. After the money had been placed in the bank, a federal income tax lien of $72,840 had been filed against Charles in the Douglas County Register of Deeds office. The state income tax division had also filed liens of $510.86 each against Charles and Payton in Shawnee County District Court, and Johnson had been served a notice of the three liens.
