From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 28, 1988:

The Lawrence Salvation Army had just marked its second week of being without a commander. Programs already in place were proceeding smoothly, but the Army’s advisory board was beginning to wonder about the delay. David Longhurst, advisory board president, said that the divisional commander had promised an interim officer would be assigned to Lawrence by Feb. 17. Longhurst added that the Salvation Army’s Territorial Headquarters in Chicago had not yet responded to the board’s strongly-worded protest over the official dismissal of Lt. David Jones, who had been forced out on Feb. 15. A representative from the Army headquarters said that a search for a new Lawrence appointee was underway, but that assignments were usually made in June to avoid disrupting families with school-age children and that therefore there were few officers available at this time of year.
