Military vehicles clogged Iowa Street and area roads on a recent Saturday as about 450 Kansas National Guard soldiers participated in a battlefield communications exercise called Tornado ’88. Two forces, “friendly” and “enemy,” had moved through the area in jeeps and Cargo Utility Combat Vehicles, fighting to win battles in an area bounded by Lawrence, McLouth, Atchison, Leavenworth, DeSoto, and Eudora. “The whole purpose of the exercise is for the commanders to think about what they do, and report it,” said Michael Goreham, an engineer adviser with the Readiness Group from Fort Riley, who was observing the day’s exercises. The event was also intended to test the units’ ability to maintain their communication network during maneuvers. In the National Guard Armory, Sgt. 1st Class Robert Puff, who was in charge of feeding the soldiers three times a day, remarked on the challenge of cooking for many more than the usual 80 soldiers. “Once you get past 100, it’s basically just another gallon of this, another gallon of that,” he explained.
