Douglas County election officials are reporting light turnout in advance balloting ahead of next week’s primary election for Lawrence city commission seats.

On Tuesday, Deputy County Clerk Benjamin Lampe said only 251 advance ballots had been cast so far: 105 in person, and 146 by mail or email. He said the county had sent out 479 ballots to voters who had requested them.

There are 62,648 registered voters in the city of Lawrence, and 79,031 in all of Douglas County, Lampe said.

Voters can cast ballots in person at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St., or they can contact the county clerk’s office to request a ballot be mailed to their home. Friday, Feb. 22, is the last day the county can mail advance ballots.

Polling at the courthouse is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday; from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday; and from 8 a.m. to noon on Monday. Lampe said state law requires advance voting locations to close at noon on the day before Election Day.

Regular polls in the city of Lawrence will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Feb. 26.

The Lawrence city commission race is the only race in Douglas County that drew enough candidates to warrant a primary. There are three commission seats up for election this year, all of which are elected at-large.

The ballot includes 11 candidates. Voters can mark their ballots for three of those candidates. The top six will advance to the April 2 general election.

The April general election also will feature races for school board seats, and the Lawrence school district’s proposed $92.5 million bond issue.
