40 years ago: K-10 injunction to be settled; construction to begin in June

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 17, 1973:

  • Construction of the K-10 highway between DeSoto and Highway K-7 in Johnson County was to begin in June of this year, announced State Highway Commissioner Robert Hagen today. A hearing had been set for April 4 in Johnson County District Court to settle the issue of a temporary injunction that had halted progress on the 7.5 miles of road since October. The suit, brought by S. R. Brunn, Olathe, charged that the highway commission had been “capricious and arbitrary” in establishing the location and design of the highway. Brunn owned about three acres which were to be affected by the proposed road improvement.
  • This was the week that saw the first 143 prisoners of war return from Vietnam, flying first into Clark Air Base in the Philippines to undergo physical examinations by a team of 60 doctors. “We are honored at the opportunity to serve our country under difficult circumstances,” said the first prisoner to step out of the first returning hospital plane. “God bless America.”
