From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 15, 1988:

• Two Topeka men had been arrested this morning after allegedly having forced their way into a downtown Lawrence pawn shop and handcuffing and gagging the manager. The two had surrendered to police officers who had been alerted by an alarm of the incident at Lawrence Pawn and Shooters Supply, 718 New Hampshire. No shots had been fired during the incident and the manager, Merlin Ewing, 60, was uninjured.
• A house formerly threatened with demolition had been saved from the wrecking ball. The Kansas State Historical Society announced today that the “Benedict House” at 923 Tennessee had been entered onto the Register of Historic Kansas Places. The house, whose central portion had been built in 1870, had been purchased by the Lawrence Preservation Alliance in May from local developer Duane Schwada, who had planned to tear down the house to build apartments. The LPA was now searching for a potential buyer who would rehabilitate the old house.
