40 years ago: County to take bids for siren installation

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 13, 1973:

  • The Douglas County Commission was planning to advertise for bids for the installation of 10 disaster warning sirens in Lawrence. Douglas County Civil Defense had obtained 15 sirens through matching federal funds, 10 of which would be installed in town. Two additional sirens were to be installed on the Kansas University campus and one each at Baldwin, Eudora, and Lecompton. The outlying cities and KU were to install their sirens, with the county sharing the costs, while bids had to be advertised for the city installation, with the city and county sharing the costs.
  • The Lawrence “Support Your Local Police Committee” today announced three candidates for the Lawrence City Commission. Filing this morning were Robert L. Elder, Fred J. Pence, and Gene F. Miller. The three read a joint statement at a press conference this morning, beginning, “The present power structure existing in the city hall must be broken.”
