40 years ago: Museum fundraising hits first goal

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 11, 1973:

  • The first phase of a fundraising campaign for the creation and operation of the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum was almost complete. Approximately $240,000 had been pledged and contributed by about 280 donors, assuring preparation of the old Watkins Bank building at 11th and Massachusetts for occupancy by the museum and the Kansas All-Sports Hall of Fame. Phase Two, which was scheduled to begin in a few days, was to raise funds for an elevator and suitable display equipment and to create a trust fund for future operating income.
  • A blood drive sponsored by the KU Pershing Rifles was having a tremendous turnout this week. Organizers of the drive said that so many people had shown up at the Kansas Union Ballroom that about 50 had left after having to wait. A total of 255 pints had been donated from 349 potential donors that day, in addition to the 214 donated on the previous day.
