Veritas boys send seniors off with win; girls lose

Veritas boys 48, Topeka Cair Paravel 25

Eudora — Veritas Christian’s boys basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a convincing victory Saturday over Topeka Cair Paravel, 48-25.

The Eagles honored seniors Andrew Jewell, Andrew Harvey, Matt Myers, Thomas Bachert, Bryce Boland and Andrew Currier.

“It was a nice win for our seniors,” Veritas coach Gary Hammer said. “Everybody got to play a lot, which was good. It was a fun game, and the guys played well. It was kind of a slow start, but we got it going after the first quarter.”

The Eagles led just 5-2 after one quarter but took a 19-7 lead into halftime, then outscored Cair Paravel 17-6 in the third quarter.

Caleb Holland led Veritas with 14 points. Elijah Harvey added 10 points, and Boland scored nine off the bench.

Veritas (14-5) will play Tuesday at St. Mary’s Academy.

Eudora — Cair Paravel broke open a close game by outscoring Veritas 24-5 in the third quarter.

The Eagles trailed just 21-17 at halftime but scored just seven points in the second half.

“We were encouraged in the first half,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “The third quarter just did us in. We kind of went cold in the second half. Scoring seven points in the second half is not going to win many games.”

Madi Bennett led Veritas with six points, and Hannah Gloss Joy Brooks and Naomi Hickman scored four points apiece.

The Eagles (8-12) will play Monday at Midland Adventist in Shawnee.
