Saturday’s monster game from senior forward Tarik Black produced the Kansas University men’s basketball program’s third Big 12 newcomer of the week honor in seven weeks.

Black, a transfer from Memphis, scored a career-high 17 points during the Jayhawks’ 86-64 victory over Georgetown at Allen Fieldhouse, KU’s first home game since Nov. 22.

The senior forward made all five field goals he attempted en route to scoring more points than he had in the previous six games combined. He was also 7-of-9 (.778) from the free throw line and added six rebounds, one assist and two blocked shots in 20 minutes.

Black’s performance paved the way for a physical victory over the Hoyas and helped improve KU to 8-3 on the season. It also came in timely fashion as sophomore forward Perry Ellis played just 12 minutes after being whacked on the head by a Georgetown defender on a layup attempt. KU coach Bill Self said following the victory that Ellis bruised a nerve in his neck and was expected to recover in a matter of days.

Black, who opened the season as a starter but has since given up the spot to emerging big man Joel Embiid, needs six points to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his career.
