Editorial: Strong foundation

The charitable Lawrence Schools Foundation is a huge asset for Lawrence schools and the community.

The assistance provided to the debate and forensics programs at both Lawrence and Free State high schools is another example of how fortunate the Lawrence district is to have the charitable support of the Lawrence Schools Foundation.

A story in Monday’s Journal-World told of how the $3,000 grants to each school help pay for students to participate in debate and forensics competitions, which often require travel and overnight hotel stays. Without the assistance of the Schools Foundation, students would have to pay those expenses themselves or spend time fundraising to offset those costs. With the funding, students can concentrate on honing their debate and public speaking skills instead of figuring out how to cover their expenses.

The support of the high school debate and forensics program is just one of many ways the Schools Foundation lends a helping hand to the Lawrence school district. Since its founding in 1983, the foundation has grown to include many efforts to recognize teachers and students and support programs that the district might not otherwise be able to afford. The foundation’s 2012 annual report lists five main areas of emphasis: early childhood education, district-wide grants, student scholarships, teacher awards and the LEAP program, which supports partnerships between schools and local businesses. In 2012, the foundation accepted just over $305,000 in contributions. With those contributions and other income from investments and events, the foundation was able to distribute just over $302,000 in grants, awards, scholarships and program support for the district.

These funds not only provide for certain “extras” within the district but also help equalize the opportunities offered to students across socio-economic lines.

The Lawrence school district would be far different without the generous support of so many local residents who provide the funds that make the foundation’s programs possible. The community should be grateful for the foundation’s mission and its ongoing efforts to make the Lawrence school district even better.
