40 years ago: Executive vice chancellor to be hired at KU, chancellor says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 3, 1973:

  • After six months in his post, Kansas University Chancellor Archie Dykes announced this week that a five-member committee would begin a search for an executive vice chancellor who would be responsible for the “day-to-day direction” of the Lawrence campus. In what he called “the almost crisis atmosphere” of his current workload, Dykes said, “I have found it is difficult to give issues the deliberate consideration they ought to have.” Dykes said he also wanted to devote more attention to the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City and focus on improving KU’s relations with legislators, state officials, and the public — long-range goals that were difficult to accomplish in the face of daily administrative busy work.
  • It was announced this week that two popular park areas at Perry Reservoir might be closed in 1974 to allow them to recover from water inundation. Heavy rains during a six-week period in September and October of this year had caused extensive grass and tree damage in the areas as floodwaters had swelled the reservoir to a record level almost 25 feet over the normal pool level. No official decision had yet been made on the temporary closing. Roads, vegetation, several miles of shoreline, restroom facilities, and grasslands in other reservoir areas had also suffered wind and water damage during the period.
