25 years ago: Olin reviews first year at Lawrence police chief

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 3, 1988:

After a year as Lawrence Police Chief, Ron Olin said this week that the department had experienced some changes in the past 12 months. “I honestly believe we’re a better police department than we were a year ago,” said Olin, who had replaced longtime Chief Richard Stanwix in early December 1987. “And that’s because of our officers. There’s more expected of them, and they’ve met those challenges.” Olin stated that his goal was to make the LPD the “best police department in the Midwest,” a goal he admitted wasn’t reached in 1988 but toward which he said they had made progress. “It’s been an enormous amount of work,” he said. “But it’s been fun. I’ve enjoyed every minute.” In addition to the focus on “officer development,” the new chief had restructured the department’s chain of command by splitting the responsibilities of his former job, assistant chief, among the seven lieutenants. He was also planning to shift the officers between assignments periodically, he said.
