KU soccer clobbers Pacific

August 26, 2013

Three Kansas University soccer players scored, and four had assists as the Jayhawks won their home opener, 3-0, on Sunday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Senior forward Caroline Kastor had a goal and an assist for KU (1-1).

Two days after a 1-0 loss at Arkansas, the Jayhawks wasted no time against the Tigers (0-2).

Junior midfielder Jamie Fletcher scored 12 minutes in for the only goal Kansas would need, off an assist from Kastor. It was Fletcher’s 11th career goal.

Kansas extended its lead just over 11 minutes into the second half. After a Pacific foul near its own goal, defender Hayley Yearout lined up a KU free kick from around 25 yards out. The junior played the ball in toward the far post and found sophomore forward Courtney Dickerson. Dickerson used one touch to pass the ball back in front of the Tigers’ goal, where junior Caroline Van Slambrouck had an easy chip in.

In the 89th minute, sophomore Ashley Williams intercepted a poorly cleared ball by the Tiger goalkeeper and, after some dribbling inside the Pacific penalty box, found Kastor streaking into the penalty box. The senior tapped in the easy goal — the 21st of her career — to put the Jayhawks up 3-0.

Kastor now has 54 career points, fifth all-time at KU.

KU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud recorded her first career shutout, notching four saves on 15 shots faced.

Kansas will travel Friday to Springfield, Mo., to face Missouri State. Match time is 6 p.m.
