From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 24, 1973:

• Although the fall semester at Kansas University had not yet begun, local motels were already ringing up a profit on upcoming football games. As of this date, it would have been nearly impossible to find a room for the weekend of Oct. 12-13, which was not only Homecoming weekend but the weekend of the KU-Kansas State game. Area motels were also reporting they were at or near the sellout point for the weekend of Band Day (Sept. 28-29) and Parents’ Day (Nov. 2-3). Some rooms were still available during the remaining home games, including Washington State (Sept. 15), Colorado (Nov. 10), and Missouri (Nov. 24).
• An agreement was reached this week between KU and Wichita State University officials in a dispute that had arisen over the wording in a recent memorandum. The memo, written the previous month by WSU’s president, had been interpreted by some officials as the first step in an attempt to convert the Wichita branch of the KU Medical School into the WSU School of Medicine. The proposed placement of the head of a part of the KU Medical School under a WSU vice president had led some involved to conclude that WSU would be on its way toward having its own medical school.
